Costa Mainsail Sunglasses Review

Costa Mainsails sunglasses are not your typical fishing sunglasses. They are part of Costas Hybrid selection that matches style with performance. I’ve got to say, at first I was a little hesitant, but over the past month they’ve grown on me every day! These aren’t your sunglasses if you’re a charter captain on the water everyday, but if you’re someone who enjoys being outdoors and wants a pair of sunglasses you can wear to any occasion, these are for you.

As always, I have used these exclusively for the last month. In this month I have done the following activities with my Costas – fished, held a baby, golfed, driven, and put up and taken down Christmas lights. The Mainsail frames have been fun frames and I’ll talk about why!

Costa Mainsail Frame & Features

The Costa Mainsail frames are a part their new hybrid line. As Costa says “The best of both worlds, these two hybrids are stylishly designed for a beach-lifestyle look, yet built with some of Costa’s most popular tech features to perform.” These features include things like, vented nose pads, keeper-ready temples, micro side shields + top hooding, Sweat channels + eye drains and spring hinges.

These features are great, I always love spring hinges and the sweat channels are great. So yes I would wear them at the beach and look good, but don’t think these are Fantail Pros. These will let light in bright sunlight around the frame any may not be the best if you’re on a boat 10 hours a day.

Costa Mainsail Sunglasses Fit

The Mainsail frames are comfortable and can be worn all day during anything outdoors. I wore these all day out walking on the Atlanta Beltline and then on the roof as I put up Christmas lights. Like most Costas, I forgot I had them on. That’s always my test.

I did think these would be tight since I since their lenses are a little smaller, but they are sized as a large on Costas site. I would say they are on the small end of large, but these fit great. I attribute the spring hinges.

Details from Costa’s Website:

Size: L
Fit: Regular
A medium lens front designed for those who prefer to cover an average portion of the face.
Nose Bridge: High Bridge Fit
Offers a more secure and comfortable fit for those with a high nose bridge and lower cheekbones. A good choice if the bridge of your nose is above the level of your pupils.

Costa Mainsail 580G Glass Lenses

I almost exclusively use Costa Green 580G lenses. This time I wanted to try something new and got the Gray Silver Mirror. I have always chosen glass over polycarbonate lenses due to their clarity and scratch resistance. I hate when a pair of sunglasses get scratches on the lens which is why I always chose the Costa 580G glass lenses. They are the most durable lenses that Costa makes. For those long days out on the water, these lenses are perfect because you won’t have to worry about getting any scratches on them when you wipe the saltwater off, especially while kayaking. The mirrored options are also quite nice and actually don’t discolor your vision.

The gray lenses are different from usual green mirror, and I think I like the green mirror more. However, there are some definite benefits to the silver mirror. They are good for everyday activities, anti-fatigue and does a good job reducing glare from the water. Also, the silver mirrors do not stand out as much in a crowd as the green or blue mirror. Whether that’s a good or bad thing is up to you!

  • 25 Costa Films™ produced that underscore Costa’s commitment to ‘community X conservation’

The Costa Warranty

Costa has historically had one of the best warranties in the business for their sunglasses. That being said, with a change-up in ownership and manufacturing the warranty seems to have changed a bit based on users’ comments lately. However, it can be hard to tell what real vs what someone is saying to get a free pair of sunglasses when they sit on their current pair. The official word is that Costa’s warranty has not changed.

If Costa eyewear has a defect in materials or workmanship, Costa will fix or replace the frames as soon as they can to get them back to the customer. I can vouch for this, as I had someone step on my sunglasses and I filed the warranty claim and I got a free brand new pair! In an effort to get customers back on the water as soon as possible and limit the time they’re without their glasses, Costa has moved to a digital warranty process. With the new digital warranty process, Costa assesses the damage from the pictures a customer provides and lets them know if they are covered under warranty, or would need to be repaired for a fee. The customer then decides if they would like to send in the frames. Costa will also cover all expenses for warranty claims including shipping. If a customer just needs a replacement part, they can visit https://customersupport.luxottica.com/wcsstore/costadelmar.html to purchase lenses, nose pads, and other parts.

The Verdict

Alright here’s the real deal. These are my wife’s favorite Costas that I own. So they will be my go-to when were out on normal day activities. Will I also have another pair when I’m out kayak fishing, definitely. But if I forget those, these will still work better than most other fishing sunglasses on the market.
